About me

A partner with leading international law firm CMS, I was formerly a partner at Herbert Smith Freehills (“HSF”) for 25 years, where I led the market-leading UK/US Disputes team for six years and the Global IP practice for nine.

I enjoy helping organisations manage risk, increase engagement and achieve their goals, with or without the need for litigation.

Active across TMT, lifesciences, FMCG and beyond, a few of the organisations I’ve helped include: Apple, BSkyB (Sky), Cadbury, easyJet, ITV, the Medical Research Council (LifeArc), Siemens, Vodafone and the Wellcome Trust.

Leadership

The pre-eminent commercial disputes team I led for six years, is a dynamic business with an annual turnover of around £160m. On my watch we delivered year on year revenue and profit growth, a strengthened reputation and, significantly, a happy ship.

Collaboration

An enthusiastic team builder, I served on HSF’s Main and UK Executive Boards, the Audit & Finance Committee and the People & Policies Group. I was happy to be front and centre of various partner-led aspects of Diversity & Inclusion, Recruitment, Learning & Development and People Management. I chaired the firm’s IT Committee and curated the art collection.

Special Projects

I enjoy special projects. I’ve reviewed global strategy, corporate values and operating divisions, as well as remuneration policies and promotion processes. Being part of the team which delivered and integrated a large and successful international merger, was both a challenge and a highlight.

Skills

I’ve led successful change in many areas, including: Strategy, People & Processes, Finance and Service Delivery.

Having spent over 30 years advising on deals and litigating cases at all levels, up to and including the Supreme Court, I have extensive trial, deal and multi-jurisdictional dispute coordination experience.

Style

I’m interested in getting the best out of people. I spend at least as much of my time with others listening as I do speaking, I find I learn more that way.
